they have to be crossfire or SLI compatible and they should be the same GPU to work properly…
and your power supply must be high enough wattage AND must support SLI/Crossfire, AND have connectors for both GPU’s…
EDIT
you are actually better off putting one of the top cards instead of two mid-range cards. you will get better performance with less heat…
They have to be the same card. I.E. 8800GT needs another 8800GT and a SLi bridge to run. It is just a way to get better graphic capabilities. So 2 cards do the same job getting it done faster.
Although, you will see if you research it the 2nd card doesn’t normally offer a increase in preformance to warrant the high costs.
Yes they should be the same cards. "SLI" as two cards together are called, split the picture between them so twice the speed etc. but unless you have a critical use for it one good card would do.The extra power needed for two may mean a power supply upgrade
Yes they have to be the same and only certain card are SLI or Crossfire compatible… and right now the best bang for buck is 2 8800GT 512Mb
It depends, if you’re going to get nvidia graphics cards, then you must have identical cards in order to run them both together and this is called SLI for nvidia.
Now, ATI is different….They created this method of combining two cards that are not exactly identical and the ability to use them both together, it’s called Crossfire X.
For example, say you got an ATI 3870X2 and then got an ATI 3870, they aren’t the same cards, but you could combine them and use them together at the same time to get a better performance gain in games.
And you obviously cant combine an ATI card with an nVidia card together, and you have to have a motherboard that supports EITHER SLI or Crossfire. Once you get a motherboards that supports SLI for example, you can’t use Crossfire on it but you could just use ONE ATI graphics card if you want to, because that motherboard only supports nvidia’s sli and ati’s sli.
